Tippet Rise: Opus 2016- Domo (Pentatone)

"The idea is that this place is going to become sort of a bucket list destination."

That was the sentiment Christopher O'Riley shared when I talked with him last summer as the inaugural season of the Tippet Rise Music Festival in Fishtail, Montana, was winding down. Tippet Rise is a haven where the world of visual and musical arts merge on a sprawling working ranch nestled in the Beartooth Mountains. It's an art center, and it's home to an intimate concert hall where the backdrop is a beautiful picture window that allows you to watch colors of the sunset reflected on the mountain range.

"We have, in my opinion, a fantastic concert hall," O'Riley says. It seats only about 150 people, but it's perfect. This hall, the Olivier Concert Hall, is sort of inspired by Snape Maltings, Benjamin Britten's place, and the Haydnsaal of the Esterhazy Palace.

"We also have some outdoor spaces," O'Riley continues. "One in particular, the sculptor and architect, Anton Garcia Abril, built Domo, which is this sort of Stonehenge looking object at the top of the hill here, and it turns out to be a perfect acoustic shell."

That perfect acoustic shell appears on the cover of Tippet Rise: Opus 2016 - Domo, a recording filled with highlights from the festival's inaugural season. Pianist Christopher O'Riley, who also hosts the public radio program, From the Top, was the artistic director for this first festival.
