Violinist María Dueñas and conductor Gustavo Dudamel - Homage to Heifetz: Lalo/Korngold/Debussy (Deutsche Grammophon); with the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela
Soul and fire. Those are the two words Spanish violinist María Dueñas comes back to when she talks about one of the greatest violinists of all time: Jascha Heifetz. He has been Dueñas’ role model as she’s developed her own tone and unique sound throughout her career.
Her latest project is an Homage to Heifetz and reunites her with Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, with whom she’s had a longstanding collaboration. On the recording, Dudamel leads the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela in Eric Korngold’s Violin Concerto and Édouard Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole. Dueñas also includes a few shorter works by Claude Debussy and Manuel Ponce in the album. For these pieces, Dueñas had the opportunity to use Jascha Heifetz’s violin, but only when she arrived in the recording studio.
