Sometimes the best stories get left on the cutting room floor. This year, Julie Amacher picks those stories up and shares them with you. She'll count down her six favorite New Classical Tracks interviews of 2016 on "New Classical Tracks, Uncut."
For December 9, Julie shares her full conversation with violinist Rachel Barton Pine, recorded earlier this year as Rachel had recently released her album, Testament: Complete Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin by J.S. Bach.
In this full-length interview with Rachel, she tells a story from when she was five years old and first experienced the power of music. "My Sunday school class went over to the nursing home," Rachel recalls, "and we were going to go around and sing Christmas carols but I'd brought my little violin. … I was going room by room, serenading each occupant. And I got to a particular room and the nurse took me aside and told me not to be put off, but that the gentleman in that room, they felt he was capable of speaking but was choosing not to speak because he was unhappy and he didn't want to be there and not to let that worry or upset me if he didn't talk when I played for him.
"I went and played for him," Rachel continues, "and at the end of my little performance, the man started crying and talking about how he'd played the violin as a child, and then the nurse started crying and my mom started crying. And I just realized that music has a power to communicate [that] just goes beyond other ways that we might communicate with each other. And it has this power to move us and to accomplish great things."
