Schubert Club names Kyu-Young Kim its next Artistic and Executive Director

The Schubert Club announced Thursday that violinist and arts leader Kyu-Young Kim has been appointed its next Artistic and Executive Director. He will succeed Barry Kempton, who is stepping down after 15 years of leadership at the organization.

Recognized for his performance skills as a world-class musician and organizational leader, Kim takes on this new position after his tenure at the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, where he served as Artistic Director and as Principal Violin since 2016.

“I am thrilled to take over the mantle of Schubert Club, one of the nation’s finest classical music presenting organizations, and a true community asset,” Kim says. “What drew me to the role was the organization’s incredible legacy of presenting some of the world’s most exciting artists … alongside their commitment to pushing the boundaries of the art form through new series like Schubert Club Mix. Honoring the past while also charting new ground aligns so well with my own artistic values, and I’m excited to lead the Schubert Club in its next chapter.”

Kim’s hiring concludes the yearlong national search for a new Artistic and Executive Director by the Schubert Club, which began in fall 2025. The organization says it is “poised to move into a new era, guided by a clear strategic vision.” And according to Schubert Club’s Board President Ann Juergens, “Kyu-Young Kim is the ideal leader for this important time in Schubert Club’s history. … I am confident he will cultivate our growth in new and transformative ways.”
