Haydn's Little Opera for the Fingers

Denesh plays Haydn

It's like a little opera, the Piano Sonata No. 34 by Haydn. One of only a handful of keyboard works in a minor key, the piece is filled with fleet and serene-like themes. The finale is marked both "Vivace molto" and "innocentemente," and gives the performer the opportunity to play the impresario and bring the entire work to a stunning and wide-eyed conclusion.

A performance with Hungarian pianist Denes Varjon from his Frederic Chopin Society recital this past February is in this week's Regional Spotlight.
