Now I may be a bit biased [full disclosure: I am a proud graduate of the University of Memphis], but I think the choral festival that took place at my alma mater was simply spectacular! Watching the joy in those student's eyes when they performed a composition co-created with Jake Runestad, award-winning composer and rising choral rockstar, was breathtaking.
When talking with Dr. Ryan Fisher, Associate Director of Choral Activities at the University of Memphis, about how he came up with the idea of this project, he said he wanted to do something different. "The idea of students getting to be a part of the process, the sausage making, was exhilarating for me," said Dr. Fisher.
As I watched the entire process unfold, word by word, phrase by phrase, I immediately understood just how brilliant Dr. Fisher's vision was for this project.
I was fortunate enough to capture the audio at the moment the students agreed upon the opening text. Standing in that room, overwhelmed by their screams of happiness, is a moment that I will never forget.
When I asked Runestad to summarize this undertaking with the honor choir in one word, he responded, "Electrifying."
