Regional Spotlight: Benjamin Grosvenor

Steve Staruch can be heard on Classical Minnesota Public Radio on Monday mornings and at other times during the week. Prior to joining the staff of MPR in 2004, Steve presented a variety of radio programs on WCAL in Northfield, Minn., where he created an immensely popular call-in program, and on WXXI in Rochester, New York. Outside radio, Steve also enjoys work as a freelance tenor and violist. Steve and his wife, Naomi, enjoy traveling, gardening and hosting dinner parties.

Benjamin Grosvenor first came to prominence as the outstanding winner age 11 of the Keyboard Final of the 2004 BBC Young Musician Competition. He then made his Carnegie Hall and Royal Albert Hall debuts aged 13. In recent years EMI Classics have supported him through an innovative development agreement. In 2008, he recorded a mixed recital of shorter works entitled 'This and That' to overwhelming acclaim, with Gramophone exclaiming "the performances by Benjamin Grosvenor exhibit a skill and talent not heard since Kissin's legendary teenage Russian debut."

The music of Morten Johannes Lauridsen, composer-in-residence of the Los Angeles Master Chorale from 1994-2001 and professor of composition at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music for more than thirty years, occupies a permanent place in the standard vocal repertoire of the Twentieth Century. Maybe best known is his 'O Magnum Mysterium' a perennial Christmas favorite.
