Undine Smith Moore knew the importance of music education from an early age. She studied piano and music theory at Fisk University and was awarded a scholarship to attend the Juilliard School. Instead, she decided to pursue music education at Columbia University Teacher’s College in New York. But despite her success, she still doubted her abilities and accomplishments as a composer, citing racism.
