Clayton Stephenson’s first piano lessons were less about becoming a pianist than giving his mom an hour to herself. While searching newspaper ads for a babysitter, Stephenson’s mother learned that she could hire a piano teacher for an extra $5 an hour instead of a babysitter, and that revelation shaped the trajectory of young Stephenson’s entire life.
That led him to a basement music school in Chinatown (Brooklyn, New York), where he says his first teacher taught him to love music instead of focusing on technique. Stephenson went on to The Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program at age 8 (a full scholarship program for disadvantaged students), Juilliard’s pre-college program at age 10, and later completed a dual degree program at Harvard University and the New England Conservatory of Music (NEC) in piano performance and economics. Stephenson became the first Black finalist at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022; he was an Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient in 2024; he received a Sphinx Medal of Excellence in 2025, and now he is a 2026 Performance Today Young Artist in Residence.
Since 2022, Stephenson has appeared with the Houston, North Carolina, Virginia, and Cincinnati Symphonies, among others; he’s had festival appearances at Grand Teton, Grant Park, and Tippet Rise; and he has performed recitals at such venues as the Kennedy Center for Washington Performing Arts and the 92nd Street Y in New York City. An internationally concertizing artist, in just the 2025-26 season, Stephenson gave recitals at the Jacobins Festival in Toulouse, France, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and he toured with the Stuttgart Philharmonic in Italy.
Having grown up in New York with a mother from China and a father from Belize, Stephenson says his musical identity beyond the piano helped him hear jazz, hip hop, and classical music all as part of one world; different genres never felt separate to him. When he’s not preparing for performances, you’ll often find him transcribing jazz works or adding to his ever-growing bucket list.
Currently, Stephenson is pursuing an Artist Diploma at NEC under Wha Kyung Byun.
