Flicks in Five: Inside Out

Flicks in Five: Inside Out

I'm going to admit to you that this is one of my favorite movies of recent years. It has one of my favorite directors in Pete Docter. It's a Pixar movie (again one of my favorites), and the score is by Michael Giacchino. It also has some really wonderful voice-over actors.

It's Inside Out, and it was nominated for a 2016 Oscar for Best Animated Picture.

For inspiration, Pete Docter took something out of his own life at the beginning and a little later on as an adult. As a child, Pete Docter's father moved the whole family from Minnesota (where they're from) to Denmark to study the music of Carl Nielsen. Pete felt like an outsider and had a great deal of social anxiety the whole time he lived there.

When Pete Docter grew up, history repeated itself, and he moved his whole family from Minnesota to California so he could take the Pixar job. His daughter, Elie, also started experiencing some of the same things Pete had as a child.

The movie is all about the little girl and what goes on inside her head with five big emotions — which are voiced by Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, and Lewis Black, among others. Critics really praised the voice-over work, as well as the rather poignant and mature storyline.

On this week's Flicks on Five, we'll hear some of Giacchino's score for Inside Out.
