Giving a cello a chance

Julie Albers, principal cellist with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, plays a Vuillaume cello, built in France in 1872. She loves the instrument, but her first impression of it was quite different.

"I first played it and thought, 'Oh, actually, I don't think it's for me. It's a great cello, but I don't think it's my voice'," she says in a recent video released by the SPCO.

On the cusp of returning the cello to the shop, a friend played the instrument for Albers and her impression changed. "I realized I just needed to learn to play [that particular] cello," Albers says. "And so I spent about a year, I would say, really learning this instrument. It was a very good decision."

Listen to Albers describe how she was introduced to and eventually grew to love her 1872 Vuillaume cello.
