Indian classical music meets Minnesota choral music this Saturday, Oct. 25, at 2:30 p.m. during the premiere of composer Shruthi Rajasekar’s Sarojini. She herself embodies both of those traditions as she melds them in her new piece, a tribute to the poet and activist for Indian independence, Sarojini Naidu.
Rajasekar has set the words of Sarojini to music for the VocalEssence singers, the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and two traditional South Indian virtuosi: her mother, veena player Nirmala Rajasekar, and drummer Thanjavur K. Murugaboopathi, who plays the mrindangam. The three of them joined Tom Crann in the Maud Moon Weyerhaeuser music studio to play and talk about the Indian Carnatic tradition and the upcoming premiere of Sarojini. Listen to their conversation through the player above!
