Women composers bring the fire

Extra Eclectic - Sept. 25, 2024

On this episode of Extra Eclectic, composer Julia Wolfe’s Fire in My Mouth deals with the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire, which took the lives of 146 factory workers — most of them young immigrant women. Its 2019 premiere came at a moment when tensions were flaring over issues of gender, labor and immigrants’ rights. Host Steve Seel features a selection from the work in an hour devoted to contemporary women composers, which also showcases music by Meredith Monk, Paola Prestini, Gala Flagello and more. Listen now!
