Minnesota Beethoven Festival - Merz Trio

Formed after three musicians met during a snowstorm in New York City, the award-winning Merz Trio has since performed across the globe and been praised for its “fresh and surprising interpretations.” On July 7, the ensemble presented a program of 19th- and early 20th-century masterworks, all quintessentially Viennese in style and teeming with boundary-breaking energy.

Ludwig van Beethoven's middle period masterwork, his Piano Trio No. 6, was paired with four later Viennese songs that drew attention to both its lyrical and virtuosic elements. Johannes Brahms’ glorious Piano Trio in C major was paired with Merz Trio’s virtuosic new arrangement of Maurice Ravel’s La Valse, a full-fledged response to the dancelike, Viennese elements suggested throughout Brahms’ trio.
