Celebrating Cinco de Mayo: A celebration of Mexican and Chicano heritage

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo

On May 5, 1862, the Mexican Army defeated the French in the Battle of Puebla. The battle was considered a great success, specifically because the Mexican troops were able to fend off an army more than twice their size. This battle resulted in a great morale boost for Mexico at the time and has since been celebrated in the Puebla municipality, where the battle took place.

But how did the Battle of Puebla become such a prominent celebration in the United States?

Find out more about the historical and cultural roots of Cinco de Mayo as we celebrate Mexican and Chicano heritage through music. Enjoy pieces by composers such as Manuel Ponce, Jose Pablo Moncayo, Arturo Marquez and many more who reflect the rich culture and history of Mexican classical music on Celebrating Cinco de Mayo by APM.
