Birge's Picks: Stay in your Lane(sboro)

Summer means classical music festivals. The biggies, like Aspen and Tanglewood, returned this summer post-COVID. And the world’s largest classical music festival comes to you with the first night of the BBC Proms on Sunday’s broadcast of Symphony Cast.

The pandemic resurgence has meant tough times for a few festivals. Minnesota’s Lakes Area Music Festival had to close due to a COVID outbreak among the musicians. Switzerland’s highly prestigious Verbier Festival had a COVID outbreak, and was forced to reprogram. But, the show must go on, and you’ll hear highlights from Verbier all week on Performance Today.

For a fabulous Minnesota mini-festival, join the Artaria String Quartet (and special friends) for their annual Stringwood Festival in Lanesboro starting this week. Between concerts, you can enjoy some of the most delicious bike trails in Minnesota, and see The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (sort of) at Lanesboro’s Commonweal Theater, which has been on the forefront of safe post-COVID performance.
