Birge's Picks: A cinema collection

It's an uncertain year for the Oscars, but no surprise to see Nomadland nominatied for Best Picture, Best Actress (Frances McDormand), and Best Screenplay and Best Director for Chloe Zhao.

Meet director Chloe Zhao (virtually) at the next Walker Arts Center dialogue this Saturday. But first, stream the movie on Hulu to see why it was also nominated for Editing and Cinematography, and revel in its stunning vistas, made all the more expansive through the soundtrack music by Ludovico Einaudi. And why wasn't Einaudi's score not eligible for an Oscar? Because in order for a film score to be eligible, it has to be 80% new material. All the Einaudi tracks in Nomadland were previously written and published. It's not streaming (yet), but keep an eye out in theaters for the just-released short film The Human Voice by Pedro Almodovar, an incandescent vehicle for Tilda Swinton, based on La voix humaine by Jean Cocteau.

Before this movie, it was made into a 1958 opera with music by Francis Poulenc, to a libretto consisting of a woman's last phone conversation with her lover, who now loves someone else. The opera was filmed as well. Tilda Swinton fans can also enjoy earlier movies with classical music connections. There's Derek Jarman's 1989 adaptation of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem. And remember Wes Anderson's Britten-filled — and decidedly lighter! — 2012 Moonrise Kingdom. Or save some time and watch every Wes Anderson movie ever made, in seven minutes.
