Ava Huebner, 2014 Showcase Composer

Age: 22

Hometown: St. Cloud, Minn.

Attended: Lawrence University, Appleton, Wisc.

I recently graduated from Lawrence University with majors in Music and Government. What was really cool is I got to make an album called Kid Art for my senior capstone project. It's available on my Band Camp page.

I'm settling into a Human Resources job in St. Cloud, Minn. I'm thinking about possibly going to law school in the near-ish future. (No solid plan, really. Just a pretty strong interest!)

What was really special for me about Minnesota Varsity is that I came to it thinking about going into science, and I left with more confidence to explore my relationship with music. I really cherish that because I got to be involved in really cool projects--especially in college--and I got to explore composing a lot more than I probably would have bothered to without experiencing Minnesota Varsity. I especially enjoyed learning about and making electronic music. I was lucky enough to get to work as the Electronic Music Studio assistant at Lawrence for my last two years there. I definitely credit Minnesota Varsity with reigniting my passion for music study and musicmaking beyond performing at a critical time for decision-making. It warms my heart thinking about all the work I got to do with music for my education and how equipped I am with knowledge and passion to continue making music for the rest of my life.

I am especially passionate about fostering and spreading an understanding that art is for everyone to make and enjoy however anyone wants. It doesn't have to be done professionally to be something special and enriching in people's lives! That idea is something wonderful that can be instilled at early ages, and that's something I think Minnesota Varsity does a great job of doing.
