Piece: Jörg Widmann — Elf Humoresken, 11. Mit Humor und Feinsinn
Why did you choose this piece?
Jörg Widmann is one of the foremost composers of the 21st century. His work, Elf Humoresken, is a wonderful juxtaposition of sound and time. It can be thought of as a decomposition of Robert Schumann's Humoresque, with elements of sound floating in the vast space of time. Elf Humoresken was dedicated to Yefim Bronfman, a good friend of my teacher. When I was choosing a contemporary work for my repertoire, my teacher suggested Elf Humoresken. Bringing out the contrasting sounds, dissonances, and shades of color brings me great enjoyment; particularly, I feel liberated when I play Elf Humoresken, and I hope to share what I have discovered in Widmann with other musicians.
