Over the past few years we've seen some modern twists on the classic diner, including the sustainability-minded Tiny Diner from Kim Bartmann and the chef-driven Nighthawks from Landon Schoenefeld.
The latest is Hi-Lo — a vintage, chrome-lined diner car that was trucked in from Pennsylvania to East Lake Street. When I went a few weeks ago, there was a half-hour wait at 7:45 on a Saturday!
It's a cute, cozy space with the classic diner booths and counter. The playful menu's signature dish is the "hi-top," which is a sort of unsweetened yeast donut, but minus the hole. They come topped with all sorts of options, savory and sweet: fried chicken, lobster, chocolate, caramel apples. And since you're indulging why not also go for one of the boozy blended ice cream drinks?
