Yes it's no joke: the country's first vegan butcher shop has arrived in Minneapolis — The Herbivorous Butcher.
A brother and sister who stopped eating meat when they were teenagers started experimenting with meat alternatives, and selling them at the farmers market. The idea is to create more variety and better flavor/texture than the frozen veggie burgers and canned mock duck available.
At their new Northeast brick and mortar, they've discovered that — interestingly enough — most customers are omnivores. This seems to speak to the popularity of vegetarian meals for health purposes.
Rachel tried some of their sausage and ribs, and as a meat-eater, didn't feel they have near the crave-ability of the real thing, but that they had generally good flavor and texture — sure a lot more interesting than the millionth veggie burger during grilling season!
