Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with 'Irish Inspirations'

Irish Inspirations

Irish music has traveled the world — from fiddles and pipes in the corner of the pub, to orchestral versions of well-loved tunes.

In this special hour-long program of music and insights — "Irish Inspirations" — host Andrea Blain has complied some of the most beautiful (and at times, unexpected) pieces of classical music, which are rooted in the traditional and folk music of Ireland. She explores how Irish music has found its way through classical music into the concert hall.

Blain says, "I've tried to strike a balance between familiar music and sounds, with recordings that won't have been heard often. I've included a very fine Irish traditional group playing music by Handel, as a way of illustrating that the Irish-Classical influence is a two-way street!"

The hour includes the famous Londonderry Air (best known as the melody to "Danny Boy"), Purcell's New Irish Tune, an Irish song setting by Beethoven, and much more. Slinte!
