Energizing with Opera

It's just an advertisement for a soccer video game, but it features a cast of superstars: Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona, Kun Agüero of Manchester City, Alex Morgan of the U.S. Women's National Team, the legendary Pelé — even NBA all-star Kobe Bryant makes an appearance.

But the uncredited superstar may be Gioachino Rossini. In this advertisement for EA Sports' FIFA 16, it's a humorously retooled version of Rossini's "Figaro" from The Barber of Seville that lends an energetic soundtrack:

The video opens with Messi and Agüero being motioned-captured for the video game, then transitions to two young men playing the video game as the virtual versions of Messi's and Agüero's clubs face one another.

Interspersed throughout the video are scenes of virtual and actual soccer, including a scene where a young player gets clattered by a hefty clogger — who promptly gets his comeuppance from speedy Alex Morgan.

The video also features fans musically competing with one another, an unexpected three-pointer of sorts by Kobe Bryant, and a play-by-play announcer and an opera diva collaborating on a crescendo.

According to Creativity magazine, the video was produced by the advertising agency Wieden & Kennedy Amsterdam.
