Morning Glories: Water

Lakes, rivers, oceans — they are precious resources that sustain life. They can also be beautiful, useful, historic, powerful and even threatening. On Morning Glories, we'll hear five pieces that remind us of contrasting aspects of the life aquatic.

Monday

Schumann: "Rhenish" Symphony

The word "Rhenish" refers to the Rhine and the Rhineland, where Schumann moved and found a warm welcome in the 1850s.

Tuesday

Klami: Sea Pictures

According to Finnish composer Uuno Klami (1900-1961), this piece represents the satisfaction and freedom found in a sailboat on a breezy, sunny day.

Wednesday

Britten: Four Sea Interludes, from Peter Grimes

It's not surprising that British composers have a knack for writing sea music — including Britten, who grew up on the North Sea coast, where the opera Peter Grimes takes place.

Thursday

Handel: Water Music

No storms or shipwrecks here — just music of pomp and dignity, to accompany the royal boat ride through London.

Friday

Grofe: Mississippi Suite

Here, the composer of the "Grand Canyon Suite" traces the Mississippi, ending up with a Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans.
