Morning Glories: Music in the Movies

Every weekday at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call these works Morning Glories.

As the Oscars approach, we'll offer five Morning Glories that remind us what a powerful contribution music makes to the movies.

The 87th Annual Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, Feb. 22. Listen to our Morning Glories all week long as we celebrate film, and don't miss Lynne Warfel's Saturday Cinema on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 10 a.m., as she features music from award-winning films past and present.

Monday

Prokofiev: Lieutenant Kije
Prokofiev's music for this film satire has gone on to win a secure place in the orchestral repertoire.

Tuesday

Bernstein: On the Waterfront
Leonard Bernstein wrote his only original film score for this gritty drama with Marlon Brando and Eva Marie Saint.

Wednesday

Thomson: Louisiana Story
The first film score, and still the only one, to win a Pulitzer Prize.

Thursday

Vaughan Williams: Coastal Command
During World War II, Vaughan Williams wrote for several films that had a strong patriotic element — his way of contributing to the war effort.

Friday

Herrmann: Vertigo
Herrmann's music for Hitchcock's thriller routinely shows up on lists of the greatest soundtracks.
