It's freezing, so why not start thinking about planning a summer vacation? Rachel was just at Grand View Lodge in Brainerd and had a great time, despite there being no snow and sub-zero temperatures. But the lodge is great for big groups of family and friends, as they have very large shared cabins that can sleep about 20 people, and you can cook, watch movies, and play pool.

Other big resorts Rachel enjoys (but that probably book up fast) are Rutgers in Grand Rapids and Bluefin Bay's new Surfside on Superior near Lutsen, where you fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves — very soothing.

If you're going rustic, the State Park network is amazing. Itasca is the most popular, with 80-some thousand visitors each year so book early — they have a historic CCC-era lodge if you don't want to tent.
