Every Monday at 9:15 a.m., I join John Birge on Classical MPR to discuss stories we're featuring on our website. Here are the stories we'll be talking about today.

This week Garrett Tiedemann interviewed Kathryn Bostic, a busy and fascinating composer who's also performed as a vocalist with acts including rapper Nas and the Talking Heads' David Byrne. Most recently, Bostic wrote the score for the indie hit Dear White People. Bostic talks about growing up with classical music, and reveals how — and why — she snuck a Schubert theme into the Dear White People score.

Most music teachers probably wouldn't recommend quaffing alcohol while practicing violin, but a pair of teachers in New York have found their studio packed with 21+ takers for their "boozy music lessons." Enrollment — and bottles — for the winter semester are now open.

A hundred years ago, a new piano was sold each year for one in every 248 Americans. Now, the ratio is more like one to 9,000. As piano stores across the country close, retailers and music lovers are wondering what's behind the decline in piano sales.
