For our weekly feature, "Moveable Feast," Rachel Hutton of Minnesota Monthly joins John Birge to talk about where to go and what to eat in Minnesota.
St. Paul's Payne Avenue is a sleepy commercial strip that hasn't changed much over the years. That is, until a few interesting restaurants recently arrived on the scene. Three notable additions include:
Ward6 — This restaurant/bar is known for their homemade and in-house offerings, particularly their corned beef hash, eggs benedict, and omelets. Eric Foster and Bob Parker opened the establishment in December of 2012 (fun fact: Parker placed 2nd in the National Bartending Olympics, the winner of which trained Tom Cruise for the movie, "Cocktail").
Tongue in Cheek — This place has a facetious name, but it really takes its food seriously. If you like to sample a lot of things, they offer a fun cocktail flight of six small sips as well as something they call "teasers," which are small 2-3 bite samples. Other favorites include the chili-braised pork belly and a fancy dessert called the "Chocolate Ode to the Dome" (as in the Metrodome) — a dome-shaped concoction that incorporates marshmallow and dehydrated peanut butter.
Cook — While it's not a Korean restaurant, their menu contains many Korean offerings, including bi bim bop (basically a ball of fried rice and salad dish), Korean pancakes, a Korean burger, as well as more traditional comfort food.
