Since its inception some 35 years ago, The Hong Kong Ballet has developed into one of the premier classical ballet companies in Asia and is quickly becoming recognized as a world-class institution of dance. It has conducted more than 30 tours to 10 countries in North and South America, Europe and Asia. This week, the company makes its Minneapolis debut at Northrop Auditorium, presenting an adaptation of the famous opera, Turandot.

The opera is by Giacomo Puccini (known for masterworks such as Madame Butterfly and La Bohéme), and while it was left unfinished when he died (composer and pianist Franco Alfano finished it a couple years later), Turandot has become one of Puccini's most famous and revered operas. The story is set in Imperial China and follows Prince Calàf, who attempts to win the love of ice-cold Princess Turandot.

The Hong Kong Ballet — a company of 40-plus dancers — has commissioned Australian choreographer Natalie Weir to set the ballet to Puccini's beautiful score, in combination with elaborate sets and beautiful costumes. This week's performances take place on Northrop's Carlson Family Stage on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 7:30 p.m., and Friday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m. For more information about the performances, including ticket info, visit the Northrop events page.
