Tomorrow is the 100th birthday anniversary of Ralph Rapson: famous MN architect, designer of the original Guthrie Theater, and master of Mid-century Modern. Any recommended Food-and-architecture combos?
There's this cool neighborhood near the U of M's St. Paul Campus known as University Grove that's a little enclave of homes designed by Ralph Rapson, Lisl and Win Close, Thomas Ellerbe — the New York Times famously called the pocket an "architectural time capsule of Modern America."
Last year, some of these homes were featured on a DoCoMoMo Tour — a group focused on the documentation and consideration of buildings in the modern movement. I haven't seen any plans for a tour yet so you can just go there and drive around, and when you're in that area it's a great excuse to visit the university's Dairy Store — cheese, ice cream, etc. produced by students, faculty, and staff — a range of cheese styles and ice cream flavors and affordable prices. They're open Wednesdays 2-5 p.m.
Also nearby: Mim's Cafe on Cleveland at Buford: a mellow student hangout with great, inexpensive falafel sandwiches, hummus, feta, and more.
