Click on Classical: Try to relax while you're having a bucket of ice water poured over your head

On Monday mornings, I join John Birge on Classical MPR to discuss stories we're featuring on our website. Due to the Labor Day holiday, this week we're talking on Tuesday. Here are the stories we'll be discussing today.

Continuing a theme we've been exploring recently, last week we featured a couple of stories about how classical music can help you relax. Sheila Regan named ten common occasions — from cooking to sleeping — when classical music can help you breathe a little more easily, and high school student Leora Eisenberg wrote about how she learned to listen to her mother when encouraged to just sit back and enjoy the music.

Of course, it's hard to relax when you're having a bucket of ice water poured over your head. Last week I blogged about a couple of interesting intersections between the world of classical music and the ALS-fighting Ice Bucket Challenge: a legendary soprano managed to accept the challenge posthumously, and a noted hip-hop producer soundtracked his icy experience with a classic composition by Steve Reich.

Finally, why do movie villains love classical music? You can now ponder that question while you watch a montage of evil-doers doing evil to the strains of the greatest music ever written.
