Every weekday at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call these works Morning Glories.
It's Back to School Month on Classical MPR, and on Morning Glories, we'll celebrate the bright college years with five composers who each penned a piece connected with university life.
Monday
Walter Piston: Symphony No. 4 On the last day of the State Fair, we'll offer Piston's lively and lyrical symphony, written for the centennial of the University of Minnesota.
Tuesday
Haydn: Symphony No. 92 ("Oxford") This symphony gets its nickname from Oxford University, which awarded Haydn an honorary doctorate at the time of its premiere.
Wednesday
Ives: Symphony No. 1 Did you have to finish a senior project? That's what Charles Ives did at Yale, by writing this symphony.
Thursday
Mozart: "Posthorn" Serenade Mozart wrote this serenade for the end of the academic year at Salzburg's university.
Friday
Erno von Dohnanyi: American Rhapsody This lively piece, dedicated to Ohio University, is built on American folksongs--including "On Top of Old Smoky" and "Turkey in the Straw."
