Classical MPR and Radio Heartland producer Mike Pengra first discovered the trio treVeld at Erte Restaurant in Northeast Minneapolis. This local group is composed of Bill Plattes on violin, Philip Rampi on bass and Dustin Smith on guitar. "Their music crosses the boundary between classical and folk," Pengra says.

treVeld hint at their local roots with the name of their 2007 album, Bohemian Flats, named for a neighborhood that once existed on the West Bank of the Mississippi River.

We got in touch with treVeld to ask them some State Fair-specific questions ahead of their set at the MPR booth on Tuesday, Aug. 26. Here's what guitarist Dustin Smith had to say:

What is your favorite State Fair food item?

Deep-fried pickles.

What is a must-see State Fair exhibit for you?

The DNR fish pool.

Which other live-music performances will you be seeing at the Fair?

The Okee Dokee brothers. They do kids' music, are great folk musicians and are local.

You've performed at the Fair before; any standout recollections?

Playing the other year for MPR under the hot sun, yet having a great time! We'll bring sunglasses this year!

treVeld perform on Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 2 p.m., at the MPR booth near the corner of Judson and Nelson at the Minnesota State Fair. Classical MPR's Lynne Warfel hosts the performance.
