Every weekday at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call these works Morning Glories.
There are so many fine violinists before the public these days — everyone knows superstars like Perlman and Bell, but there's also a rising generation of talented players. We'll share just five of them with you this week on Morning Glories.
Monday
Rachel Barton Pine has done a lot to explore the violin repertoire — here's one of her finds: the Scottish-flavored "Pibroch" Suite by Alexander Mackenzie.
Tuesday
Patricia Kopatschinskaja is a violinist we'll be hearing a lot more from, since she'll be joining the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra as an Artistic Partner. Today she plays Prokofiev's Second Concerto.
Wednesday
Louis Spohr's Concerto No. 8 used to be a warhorse, till it faded from fashion. You'll have a chance to decide for yourself, thanks to Hilary Hahn.
Thursday
Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Concerto took the other trajectory. Once something of a curiosity, it's now a swashbuckling standard. Philippe Quint takes the starring role.
Friday
Maxim Vengerov turns 40 this month — we'll note the occasion with his interpretation of the Schubert Fantasy.
