Every weekday at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call these works Morning Glories.
As we continue to celebrate Music for Learning, we focus on musicians who have come from El Sistema, Venezuela's remarkable "system" of music education, whose vision of music training and social change is now being emulated throughout the world.
On Morning Glories, we'll hear from El Sistema's premier orchestra — the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra — as well as from some of its notable alumni.
Monday
Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet
On the podium is El Sistema's most famous "graduate," Gustavo Dudamel.
Tuesday
Vanhal: Double Bass Concerto
Here the Orchestra's double-bass player, Edicson Ruiz, steps into a solo role.
Wednesday
Falla: The Three-cornered Hat Suite
The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra existed for years before it made headlines. Here's an earlier recording, with Eduardo Mata conducting.
Thursday
Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 3
Pianist Yuja Wang partners with the Orchestra in this famously challenging concerto.
Friday
Evencio Castellano: Santa Cruz de Paicarigua
Dudamel conducts this colorful 1954 piece by the Venezuelan composer Evencio Castellanos.
