Music education can be challenging: most schools do not have the budget to bring in live musicians or to take their students to a performance; most students have never or rarely seen a live musical performance; and many music programs across the state have experienced cuts in classroom time and budget.

That's where Classical MPR's Class Notes Artists help. Class Notes Artists are professional musicians who visit elementary schools to perform and to talk about music, composers and instruments.

And the Class Notes Artists' visits aren't just one-off diversions. Classical MPR and the artists collaborate to create curriculum that reflects the performance content and supports the Minnesota standards for arts education; this is provided for music teachers in advance of the Artist visit. And the experience of the live performance can be extended to the classroom and to the children's homes, because all of the schoolchildren receive a free compilation CD of the year's Artists.

Class Notes Artists is completely free for schools. The goal of the program is to create authentic and transformative experiences for young students, inspiring creativity and contributing to what they're already learning from their music teachers.

Classical MPR's Class Notes Artists will be performing in schools throughout Minnesota during the 2014-2015 academic year. Join us at 9, 10 and 11 a.m., and at 3, 4, 5 and 6 p.m., as we introduce each Class Notes Artist.

Belladonna Baroque Quartet

Founded in 1993, the Belladonna Baroque Quartet perform Baroque and Renaissance music on period instruments. Their album, Folias Festivas, was released in 2001. One of the strengths of Baroque music in school presentations is its imitative quality, which mirrors a fundamental way humans learn.

"I do believe that's the passion of doing outreach: you can reach kids you don't even know you're reaching. You're bringing this beauty to them to inform them. That's our hope, that's our goal, and that's our dream." — Cléa Galhano, Belladonna Baroque Quartet

Last fall, the Mill City String Quartet went to 13 different communities in southwest Minnesota doing music outreach in libraries. In its programming for kids, the Mill City String Quartet performs classical string quartet repertoire as well as a global and ethnic mix of music arranged for strings.

"We really believe that music outreach programs are important for young children. You never know how it's going to influence someone's life. When I was only three years old, my parents took me to the mall and there were kids there playing violin and it changed me forever … 29 years later, I'm a professional violinist." — Huldah Niles, violin, Mill City String Quartet

The quintet was established in 1976 and it still retains three of its original members. The group has many CDs available, featuring music from many genres and eras, ranging from Renaissance to Civil War songs.

The members of L'unica are experienced in doing music outreach in schools; in the past L'unica presented the changing roles of instruments in the chamber ensemble from Baroque period to modern day. Look for L'Unica to visit schools in central Minnesota during the 2014 - 2015 school year.

"There's a perception out there, I think, that classical music is a bit snooty or perhaps dry … I think that as classical musicians, we have a responsibility to get out in the community and play, especially for children." — Tina Lamberts, L'Unica Trio
