"Mozart in the Jungle": The scandalous world of classical music, coming to an iPad near you

Anyone who's spent time in the classical music world knows that just because someone can sing like an angel, that doesn't mean he or she acts like one...but Amazon is hoping that the frisson of classical musicians partying like rock stars will attract viewers to Mozart in the Jungle, an online video series that's currently in development, reports the Wall Street Journal. A recently-filmed pilot episode, which will be available on Amazon early next year, features Malcolm McDowell as a conductor, with a cameo by (natch) Joshua Bell.

The inspiration for the series is the 2005 book Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs, and Classical Music, a memoir by oboist Blair Tindall. The Ball Four of classical music, Mozart in the Jungle describes a New York scene where players will do whatever it takes to get a good gig — and will take whatever people are doing.

Of course, no matter how sordid the true story behind the symphony is, Tindall is in a league of her own when it comes to extracurricular pursuits. After the acrimonious end of what she described as a "faux marriage" to Bill Nye (yes, that Bill Nye), Tindall dumped toxic solvent in Nye's flower bed, and the Science Guy felt the need to file a restraining order.

So far, there are no reports of Nye making an appearance in the Amazon series...but then, they have to save something for the second season.
