Every weekday morning at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call them Morning Glories.
On Morning Glories, we're continuing our journey at the BBC Proms. This week, we're firmly planted in the islands of Great Britain and Ireland, at least as far as orchestras and ensembles go.
Monday
Peter Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 2
BBC Philharmonic/Gianandrea Noseda
This symphony uses folk songs from Ukraine prominently.
Tuesday
Dmitri Shostakovich: Piano Concerto No. 1
Barry Douglas, piano & conductor; Alison Balsom, trumpet; Camerata Ireland
This piano concerto also has an important part for solo trumpet — so we have not one, but two star soloists.
Wednesday
Ralph Vaughan Williams: Toward the Unknown Region (Prom 38)
Codetta; Irish Youth Chamber Choir; National Youth Choir and Orchestra of Great Britain/Vasily Petrenko
Young musicians from Great Britain and Ireland come together to perform Vaughan Williams's setting of Walt Whitman.
Thursday
Gustav Holst, Indra (Prom 39)
BBC Philharmonic/David Atherton
Holst wrote several pieces drawing on the culture of India, including this tone poem.
Friday
Modest Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition (Prom 41)
London Symphony Orchestra/Valery Gergiev
In this piece, Mussorgsky imagines a visitor to an art gallery, promenading from picture to picture — perhaps a particularly appropriate choice for this festival?
