For our new weekly feature, "Moveable Feast," Rachel Hutton of Minnesota Monthly joins John Birge to talk about where to go and what to eat in destinations Classical MPR listeners may be interested in visiting.
This week, Rachel and John talk about what to eat in St. Paul, Minnesota during the Nine Nights of Music at the Minnesota History Center (through Aug. 27.)
The Nine Nights of Music is an outdoor concert series featuring the diverse sounds of Minnesota. These free outdoor performances are a picnic destination, but we've got you covered in case you forgot to pack yours!
Dining
There's no shortage of excellent restaurants near downtown St. Paul, so we've chosen to highlight some of our favorites.
For middle eastern food, Babani's Kurdish Restaurant is a must. Babani's is one of the few Kurdish resturants in the country — their dowjic soup is Rachel's personal favorite.
For delicious Asian fare, look no further than University Avenue! Choose from Chinese food at Little Szechuan, Vietnamese food at Mai Village, Cambodian food at Cheng Heng, Thai food at Bankok Thai and more!
Rachel is partial to the delicious curries at Bankok Thai, but she does offer this word of warning — at Bankok Thai they do not mess around with the spice! If you're in the mood for something hot, this may be just the ticket.
Al fresco options
In the mood to have your picnic brought to you? In that case, choose to dine al fresco at one of the various local restaurants that offer outdoor patio seating.
Popular choices include W.A. Frost & Company, Moscow on the Hill, and The Happy Gnome.
Hidden gem
An under the radar gem, Forepaugh's Restaurant is located in a historic Victorian mansion and serves a contemporary globally-inspired menu.
