Here's Esa-Pekka Salonen, conductor of London's Philharmonia Orchestra, putting down his baton to carry the Olympic torch, to the strains of his recording of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony.

I was fascinated to learn on NPR that the tradition of the Olympic Torch procession comes not from antiquity, but rather 

 for the 1936 Berlin Olympics. It's ironic: the same Nazi association makes it taboo to perform 

, yet the torch procession has become an institution.

John Birge has been hosting, producing and performing classical music for more than 25 years. Since 1997, he has been hosting on Minnesota Public Radio's Classical Music Service. He played French horn for the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops Orchestra and performed with them on their centennial tour of Europe in 1995. He was trained at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Eastman School of Music and Interlochen Arts Academy.
