This week, Classical MPR is honoring famed 19th-century Hungarian composer Franz Liszt on the occasion of what would be his 200th birthday, this Saturday, October 22. Both on air and on the web, we are offering an array of programming paying tribute to this great composer and the enduring genius of his work.
On Saturday, we'll be featuring a Classical Live broadcast, hosted by Classical MPR's Fred Child, of renowned pianist Marc-Andrew Hamelin performing an all-Liszt recital. The concert begins at 7 p.m. and runs for one hour.
Also on Saturday, Lynne Warfel will host "Cartoon Rhapsody," an hour-long program of Liszt compositions featured in cartoons. Liszt was perhaps the leading composer in providing soundtracks for America's most memorable cartoons, and this program will feature a number of his compositions as well as some from his close colleagues.
For last week's edition of New Classical Tracks spotlighted the debut recording from the young Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili, a disc that pays tribute to Liszt on the eve of his 200th birthday.
If that's still not enough Liszt for you, don't worry — there's more! Pipedreams has hosted Liszt-themed programs both this week and last week in honor of the composer's birthday. Enjoy them both!
Last but definitely not least, Classical MPR is giving away copies of Pierre-Laurent Aimard's new recording The Liszt Project. Learn more about the CD and enter the giveaway here.
