Le comte Ory Live at The Met

Gioachino Rossini

Gioachino Rossini broke the mold with his 1828 opera, Le comte Ory.

The opera is indeed a comedy, but did not conform to the traditional forms of opera comique. In a normal opera comique, spoken dialogue accompanies the arias. But Rossini used recitative instead of spoken word, and much longer songs with more complicated forms that was expected of opera comique.

Oxford Music calls Le comte Ory a "uniquely Rossinian creation." To hear this quite funny opera sung by quite talented singers, listen to Classical MPR Saturday, April 9 at 12:00 pm CDT for a live broadcast of Le comte Ory from The Metropolitan Opera.
