With Vincenzo Bellini dead and Gioachino Rossini retired from writing opera (at the ripe age of 37), Gaetano Donizetti became the operatic king of Italy.

Donizetti's newest topic came from Scottish literary giant Walter Scott (1771-1832). Scott's novel, "The Bride of Lammermoor" (you didn't think "Lammermoor" was Italian, did you?) was based on a true story of forbidden love, resulting in murder and madness.

Donizetti's treatment of Scott's book includes quite the showcase for coloratura sopranos. Saturday, Lucia is played by Natalie Dessay. She'll knock your socks off.

Hear Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor broadcast live from The Met on Classical MPR, Saturday, March 19th at noon central.
