Awadagin Pratt is a professor of piano at the University of Cincinnati and the recipient of multiple prestigious awards. He’s never shied away from talking about his experiences as a Black man in classical music. In working to make classical music a more welcoming space for young Black musicians, he started the Nina Simone Piano Competition. Winners of each age group go home with a cash prize of up to $50,000, and the three finalists perform with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
