Swinging, Austrian-style

Can an Austrian orchestra swing? We explore that question, as the Bruckner Orchestra of Linz, Austria, gives a performance of the Symphonic Dances from Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story." Bernstein's music is jazzy, raucous, not the least bit tidy or controlled. We'll see if the Austrians can get into the American spirit of the music, in this performance from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Plus, a new Piano Puzzler with Bruce Adolphe.

Charles Kwong

Charles Kwong

While exploring a glacier in the Swiss Alps, composer Charles Kwong used underwater microphones to record a trickling stream. Slowing the recordings revealed distinct, marimba-like pitches in the flowing water. This time-shifting inspired Festina lente, meaning "make haste slowly." Overlapping musical textures and timelines make the piece feel both fast AND slow. Today, we’ll hear the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra perform the world premiere of Charles Kwong’s Festina lente, conducted by Lio Kuokman.
