Concerts by Class Notes Artists aren’t just for school audiences! As part of the YourClassical Class Notes program, Minnesota Public Radio also presents the Class Notes Concert Series, a community showcase that features artists who have performed at partner schools. Two concerts in greater Minnesota, free and open to the public, are coming up in May.

The ensemble e(L)ement, featuring flutist Karen Baumgartner and harpist Mallory McHenry, will perform May 8 in East Grand Forks. The duo’s repertoire includes contemporary composers and original pieces commissioned by Baumgartner and McHenry.

The 5 p.m. concert will be held at Bernie’s Restaurant (121 Demers Ave., East Grand Forks). The event is free, and no registration is required.

Across the state, the trombone quartet Paper Clips will play May 15 in Two Harbors. The Minneapolis-based ensemble showcases the history and cultural impact of the Motown Records label, using the soulful melodies and rhythms of 1960s classics to connect to the roots of Black American music.

Registration is not required but is preferred for the 5 p.m. concert, which will be held at Castle Danger Brewery (17 Seventh St., Two Harbors).

Earlier this spring, recorder/guitar duo Alma Brasileira presented a concert in Winona as part of the series. The duo’s scheduled concert in Worthington was postponed because of weather and possibly will be rescheduled.

The Class Notes program sponsors school concerts and provides free educational resources to teachers. These community concerts are a fun way for the public to enjoy artists’ performances while they’re in town for school appearances.
