Need ideas for easy and fun at-home music learning? Here's our latest Classical Kids Music Lesson.

Snow came early to Minnesota this season. Listen to music inspired by snow and think about how composers have captured the magic of snow through music.

Target age range: Grades 1-6

1. Brainstorm a list of descriptive words for snow. How does it look? How does it make you feel?

2. Below are four pieces inspired by snow. Listen to each piece and do the associated activity, or choose one piece a day for every day it snows.

3. The Snowman is an animated movie about a snowman who comes to life. The main theme music for this movie is called Walking in the Air, by Howard Blake. As you listen, do a snowflake-related art project. Maybe it's drawing a pretty winter scene, or cutting out paper snowflakes. Find good ideas for snowflake crafts here.

4. Composer Scott Joplin wrote a short piece for solo piano called When Your Hair is Like the Snow. What do you think that title means? After listening, write a sentence or two that explains your thoughts about the title.

5. In his ballet The Nutcracker, composer Peter Tchaikovsky wrote a dance called Waltz of the Snowflakes. As you listen, take a movement break and dance around like a snowflake.

6. In the song Snowflake, by Kate Bush, she begins by singing from the perspective of a snowflake. What do you think it would feel like to be a snowflake? As you listen, do a little research about how snow is actually formed. Find some snow-related facts and vocabulary for younger children here. Older children might enjoy learning how snowflakes are formed, by reading here.

7. Just for fun, take a look at these snow sculptures. Find inspiration for the next time you go out and play in the snow.
