Flicks in Five: Alfred Hitchcock

Flicks in Five: Alfred Hitchcock

A self-effacing diminutive English gentleman appeared in Hollywood in the 1930s, and by the late 1950s, his nine-stroke pencil caricature had become internationally famous.

Alfred Hitchcock, the master of suspense, long associated with holding audiences on seat-edges, casting handsome leading men and beautiful (usually blonde) leading ladies, had a musical muse in Bernard Herrmann.

The two collaborated on many projects, including Vertigo, The Birds, North by Northwest, and most famously, Psycho. In this score, Herrmann perfectly captures the tension, the suspense, and the fear of Hitchcock's film.

On this week's Flicks in Five, we'll hear some of that unforgettable soundtrack, arranged into a suite for strings.
