Queen Elizabeth's 1947 letter about Prince Philip romance to be auctioned

Next year, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary. A handwritten letter that offers an early window into one of the great love stories of our time is about to go up for auction in England.

"The first time I remember meeting Philip was at the Royal Naval College," the handwritten letter on Balmoral College stationery begins. "I was 13 years of age and he was 18 and a cadet just due to leave."

The letter was written in 1947, shortly before Elizabeth, then 21, wed Philip. Staff at Chippenham Auction Rooms expect the note to fetch about $1,500 when it goes under the hammer on April 23.

"We both like dancing," writes the young Elizabeth, who became queen in 1952 and had four children with Philip. The couple's oldest, Prince Charles, has now been next in line for the throne for 64 years, making him the longest-serving heir apparent in British history.
