TianYang Liu won First Prize and the Best Performance of a New Work in the solo division of the 2013 International Society of Bassists Competition. He has won numerous other solo competitions, including the 2012 International Double Bass Competition in Singapore and the 2013 Concerto Competition at the San Francisco Conservatory. He frequently presents solo recitals in the United States and Asia.

Liu was born into a family of musicians, and began studying violin with his mother at age three. At four years old, he already demonstrated an incredible music talent and received a special honorary award from Violin Competition in Chang Sha. Liu's double bass training began at age 11 with his father, Zhen An Yang.

Liu received a B.A. in the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing where he studied with Da Fu and Jun Xia Huo. He received a Double Bass Artist Certificate in University of North Texas, studying with Jeff Bradetich.

Most recently, Liu earned a M.M. at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where he worked with Scott Pingel. Liu's primary performance instrument was built by Angelo del Toppani in 1736.
